Exhibition at La Pedrera, Art in Stone
Don’t miss “Art in Stone”, an exhibition celebrating the stone structure of the Casa Milà, the building popularly known as La Pedrera (‘stone quarry’ in Catalan). It brings together a rigorously curated selection of more than eighty works from public and private collections.
ADVANTAGES:
Curated by Penelope Curtis, the art historian and former director of Tate Britain in London and the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, the exhibition showcases the work of Hans Arp, Louise Bourgeois, Eduardo Chillida, Naum Gabo, Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Isamu Noguchi and Jorge Oteiza, who were all born between the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. It traces the often parallel artistic paths they took in order to explore these new ways of expression, and highlights their points of convergence.
Stone has played a central role in the evolution of modern sculpture. During the first thirty years of the 20th century, a number of sculptors returned to carving directly into stone and began making their own works inspired by abstract forms as a new modern attitude to art.
In addition to these abstract works, which will engage in a dialogue with La Pedrera, and the photographs Aglaia Konrad has taken at the Carrara quarries, a complementary section shows the way the “pioneers” of modern sculpture have stimulated the next generation of artists, including Xavier Corberó, Stephen Cox, Luciano Fabro, Barry Flanagan, Cristina Iglesias, Anish Kapoor, Ettore Spalletti and Alison Wilding, and how stone has inspired new conceptual ways of working.
