Church of Santa Anna

A haven of peace and tranquillity in the heart of Barcelona

The church of Santa Anna is a hidden treasure tucked away right in the city centre, just off the Plaça Catalunya among the main shopping streets. We invite you to enjoy a few moments' contemplation in this haven of peace that will take you back to another age.

The church was begun in 1141 by the Order of the Holy Sepulchre and is mainly Gothic in style. Its wonderful cloisters date from the 15th century when the Monastery of Santa Eulàlia was added. We invite you to visit the most important parts of this special yet relatively unknown building.

When you arrive, you'll see the main entrance which features the first patriarchal cross depicting Saint Anne which dates from 1300. Inside the church, the Romanesque windows in the presbytery, transept and dome depict scenes from the Book of Genesis. Adjacent to this part of the church is the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the highlights, where there is an interesting reproduction of a sculpture dating from 1936.

In the central nave of the church, you'll be able to see a beautiful example of the austere and elegant Catalan Gothic style. The chapterhouse, which you enter through the Romanesque door in the cloisters, has a small chapel with references to Santa Eulàlia as it was once part of the monastery dedicated to her.

The cloisters are worth special mention. They were built in the 15th century and you'll be able to admire the different styles that show the evolution from Catalan Gothic to Renaissance architecture.
